This book created widespread interest and led to the USA energy agencies funding over $50 million on novels drills in the following ten years. It stimulated considerable work on novel drilling by Exxon, Shell and Gulf Oil and other commercial companies.

This figure shows Dr William Maurer (right) working with a Russian engineer (Ted Schweisberge) who is translating Russian technical papers on novel drills for Maurer’s first book NOVEL DRILLING TECHNIQUES published in 1968 in the USA and in Romania in 1971.

ADVANCED DRILLING TECHNIQUES (1980)

Dr Maurer met with Russian drilling engineers in Moscow in 1975 and 1976 to discuss the pioneering work they were doing on novel drilling in Russia.

The USA Government work led to the commercialization of several of these novel drills including rock melting drills, spark drills, PDC bits, abrasive jet drills, and thermal spalling drills.

Dr. Maurer publishing his second book entitled ADVANCED DRILLING in 1980 which described the work done on novel drilling from 1968 to 1980.

The first book contained only 114 pages because there was little information available on novel drills in 1968 whereas the second book contained 698 pages due to the tremendous amount of work done on these drills during the intervening 12 years. .

No one has written a book on novel drilling since 1980, so these books are still good references on this subject.
